DESCRIPTION: This course is a SAT prep course that teaches the same successful techniques that IES is known for in the field of standardized test prep. This course will focus on problems and areas specific to non- native English speakers.

    WHO:
*Any 9th/10th/11th grader who is new to America but is enrolled in a HIGH SCHOOL and is working within an ESL or regular HS curriculum.
*Any American born citizen who grew up speaking another language in their homes, speaks with an accent, or is having trouble in ENGLISH classes because of their dual language ability.
*ESL students who are doing well in HS curriculums but are scoring low on STANDARDIZED tests and can not improve through normal means.

    WHY:
National statistics have proven that ESL students are scoring lower on standardized tests and are often overlooked. Some may even be doing fine in ENLGISH HS classes but are lost when it comes to taking standardized tests that can not be mastered by memorizing material or regurgitating lessons.

Unfortunately ESL students have different problem areas from the average student and are either afraid to speak up in a class or can not figure out the correct questions to ask.

    HOW:
*VOCAB: RECOGNIZING WORDS WITHIN WORDS: ESL students usually have decent vocabularies developed through memorization. But, SAT tests surprise students. In other words they must learn to use ROOTS and PREFIXES/SUFFIXES to figure out meanings and tones of word choices.

    *VERBAL:
SLANG AND SLANTS: ESL students have difficulty with the innuendos and idioms of the American Language. Some can read English fluently and have no learning problems but are still not scoring as high as they would like because of their overall inability to understand colloquial language and idiomatic phrases.
TONE AND CLUES: The irony, tone and sarcasm needed to master sentence completions and reading comps must be gotten through subtle innuendos and clues. ESL students are not being taught these clues nor are they introduced to them in their homes.
DIRECTIONS: Sometimes an ESL student is struggling simply because they do not understand the directions or what is expected from this very different test.

    · WRITING: ESSAY TEMPLATES: How can a person new to this country and our language be expected to write a fantastic and impressive essay? IT takes years of work to learn GOOD writing. IES will teach simple templates that will absolutely raise essay scores while hiding weak areas and stressing strengths. Student will plan examples ahead of time and practice perfecting them. They will be taught how to use these planned examples in any situation. Students will learn how to use active words and emphatic ideas within their capability range in order to produce persuasive essays.
    · MATH: (Optional) Tips and tricks will be covered along with emphasis on DIRECTIONS and WORD PROBLEMS.
